Active tags that consume little power

AIST and its spin-off company Ymatic announced that they developed (active) RFID tags that consume very little electric power. If their tag communicates with a reader every five minutes, the tag's battery (small, coin-sized) could theoretically last for about 60 years. It can be embedded in houses, buildings, and tunnels for long-term monitoring of temperature and stress. Ymatic plans to release a related product by next spring. The tags' size: 3.6cm x 2.8cm x 6mm.
