RFID enables hustle-free Duty Free Shopping

Duty Free Shop (DFS) introduced an integrated RFID POS (Point of Sale) system at DFS Galleria Okinawa, a mega shopping mall in Okinawa, Japan. The system is designed to help travelers shop easily without carrying heavy luggage and to automate customs declaration processes.

The linux-based system which was developed by IBM will be introduced in a store at a Chinese airport this year. It may eventually be introduced in stores at other airports in the world.

Travelers get RFID customer identification cards called "PAX card" when they subscribe the service at DFS shops. They can shop by using the cards which identify the travelers and automatically record purchased items so as to satisfy customs regulations.
